Welcome to the Province of Limburg: what a feeling!
Limburg: isn't that the Maastricht province, the soft-sounding G, the joie de vivreand the hills? Where the weather always seems better? Absolutely. But if you look at the map of Limburg, you'll find so much more! The Limburg landscape, Limburg history and, of course, the people of Limburg themselves. Connected by feeling. With a capital F.
The Limburg landscape
The hills of South Limburg are well known of course. However, the 'Dutch Hills' are only part of the rich and varied landscape of Limburg. Grab the map again: hills in the South, water in Central Limburg, heathland and forests in North Limburg. Every ten kilometres the Limburg landscape seems to change slightly. Travel through the province and you won't get bored. Cycle along the River Maas, Geul, Gulp, Jeker or Roer rivers, sail on the Maasplassen lakes, walk through the former peat area De Peel, conquer the sand of the Maasduinen dunes. It's all possible in the Limburg landscape.
The people of Limburg
There is no such thing as ‘the Limburger’ – as a definition of a single person. The province of Limburg is a colourful patchwork of local cultures and dialects. For some Limburgers, that is even more important than being a Limburger. Yet the Limburgers have more in common than they will ever admit. The people of Limburg are people of feeling. They are people who value community, family, history and tradition. Their DNA consists of a deep-rooted sense of individuality, pride and hospitality. Limburgers like to show others their province. And that includes visitors and new residents from near and far. So that later on you too will feel – albeit slightly – a Limburger.
The history of Limburg
Just like the Limburg landscape, the history of Limburg is rich and varied. From Heerlen's Roman past to the death of musketeer D'Artagnan in Maastricht and from the mines in Parkstad and Sittard-Geleen to the stone ovens in De Peel. Think of the great ecclesiastical significance of the Roermond diocese. Not to mention the war history of Limburg; during the Second World War and the subsequent liberation, now 75 years ago. In terms of industry, culture and politics: Limburg has left its mark on history. A mark that can be seen in many places in Limburg.
